WOW! Do you know how long I have been sitting on this project?!? WAY too long. I’ve been so excited to share it too, I don’t know what the heck happened. Oh yeah…it’s called life. And it’s called sunshine. It calls my name and begs me to come out and play in it. I can’t refuse the sunshine…it is afterall my sunshine, my only sunshine. It makes me happy…oh well I think you get it. I’m a slacker and that’s all there is to it. I have used this veggie tray at a few parties already this spring and summer and it’s been the talk of the party. I’m not going to act all humble and stuff because this is super darn cute. No denying it. 
DIY Veggie Tray
This is a super easy build if you have a saw and a nail gun. You can also put this together with a hammer and nails, but I super big heart my (I let me husband think it’s his) nail gun
So you will need:
- That nail gun, or hammer and nails.
- A pan with a lip on it (this is called a jelly roll pan
and mine is 18×13
- Wood. I used 1×4’s but pallet wood will also work (free, cha ching!). You just want something thin and not too heavy.
- A bottom for your box. I used a scrap of bead board, again something thin and light.
- Optional paint or stain.

I can tell you the dimensions of mine, but if you have a different sized pan then use the dimensions of your pan.
The length of my pan is 18″, so I cut the two long pieces at 17″. The width of my pan is 13″, so I cut the shorter pieces at 14″.
That way you get the corners showing on the front of the box, for a more produce crate like look.
For the bottom piece I cut it to 18.5″ long and 13″ wide. Just make sure it will attach to the bottom easily.
Then just nail it all together! Join the corners, bang bang! Put on the bottom, bang bang! Woohoo!
Paint or stain if you want. I stamped the letters “FRESH” with some foam stamps on one side, and then hand lettered the “VEGGIES” on the other side. I then white washed mine by watering down some white chalk paint a bit and brushing it on.
First of all, let me show you the genius of this box. You can totally cut up all your veggies, put them in bags and put them in the box to transport them to your party. Or if you are going to be refilling the tray you can keep the extras in there. Also-if it’s going to be out for a while and you want it to stay cold, put some ice packs in plastic bags and put those babies in there. So fantastic!
The pan acts as a lid, so it will all stay together nicely. No need to balance it on your knees as you drive to the party!
Now let me show you how I put it all together so it looks like it is overflowing with fresh veggies. 
Put the pan on your crate. You will need some kind of bottom greenery. I have used big lettuce leaves like this in greens, reds, and purples. I have also used cabbage leaves that I had and that worked out well too. Whatever is pretty and a good price, pick up a head of that. Lay it out on the pan so that it’s hanging over the side a bit.
Put your dip in the middle. 
Add all your yummy, beautiful colors around the bowl. Ta-da! 
Take it to your next party and your veggie tray will kick Mrs. Jone’s cookie platter’s trash in terms of cuteness.
Just kidding….
Kind of.
You can also use it as a fresh fruit tray, and when you aren’t having a party, it looks SUPER cute on your counter full of your fresh produce that you keep out. I happen to know that from experience as well.
